Curriculum App Reviews - Math (7-12)
Title: Algebra Pro
Publisher: Easel
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free
Review: This app is dedicated to Algebra I. It has over 100 questions with answers in 15 different categories. It is a very basic app.
Submitted By: Sarah Distler, Hamilton City Schools
Review: The good news: this app is now free. The bad news: it is free because the publisher does not support it anymore (which means future bugs will not be fixed). The cool thing about the app is that it has ShowMe videos about different algebraic concepts. The student can search thru many categories and pick out what they are currently doing in their math class.

Title: Calculator Pro
Publisher: MYW Productions
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free
Review: An App Store Rewind 2011 winner, Calculator Pro is a calculator that can grow with students. Use it as a standard calculator for basic operations or tilt to landscape and it transforms into a scientific calculator. The large keyboard is easy to use, just swipe to edit number inputs. It includes adjustable themes to customize the look, and optional skins for $0.99. It is particularly useful for middle school students whose math curriculum includes the need for both basic and scientific calculators. It's a great math tool for any level and its size also makes it useful for the visually impaired.

Cost: Free version available, Full version $4.99
Review: Caster Mobile Studio allows teachers and students of all content areas to create podcasts. Podcasting is an engaging way for students to explain what they know through easy audio recordings. This app makes this even simpler with the use from either an iPod Touch or iPad. Podcasts can be shared via email, Dropbox, or your own school's server. Tired of giving the same old paper and pencil tests? Have your students create a podcast instead!

Title: Cloud On
Publisher: Cloud On, Inc.
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free
Review: Cloud on is a free app that allows you to create, view, and modify Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly on your iPad. There are many other apps out there that allow you to do this but I have not seen one that is free. The documents you create are easily shared to a Dropbox account (which you will need to set up). This is also free. This app could be used in any class that creates documents. Awesome app for creating those digital portfolios.

Title: Elevated Math
Publisher: Elevated Lab Press

Cost: Free
Review: This app consists of 173 lessons, but you have to buy some of the lessons. It does show you all of the content standards for free so it is a nice reference tool. It also has ACT/SAT prep materials that are free. Not the easiest app to navigate, but it isn't bad once you get the hang of it.

Title: iCrosss
Publisher: Oleh Yudin
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: $.99
Review: iCrosss is very cool. Finding images of complex geometric solids is hard to do online. You can build very complex solids, like dodecahedrons, on this application. I find think it would be best used in a higher-level middle school classroom or on the 9th grade geometry level.

Title: iResponse
Publisher: TATE, Inc.
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: $.99, the Pro version is $4.99
Review: iResponse is another classroom responder system. Unlike other classroom responder systems, iResponse works in conjunction with your own laptop. Using the wireless network in your school, iResponse allows teachers to create quizzes on the computer and "push" questions to their students immediately. I also like the fact that teachers can create questions on the fly and push them to their students. iResponse works seamlessly and the students love taking quizzes. I have used this app many times to do quick comprehension checks during the teaching of the lesson. This is wonderful for students who are afraid of answering out loud for fear of being wrong. No one knows if a student got the answer correct except the teacher and the individual student. NOTE: the teacher laptop also needs to download the free iResponse software from their website.

Review: This is an EXCELLENT math resource! There are over 800 questions for students. There is a button to hit that gives the students a formula sheet and hints if they are stuck. You can choose to do math by grade level although some of the 8th grade math is definitely higher level math. Each question also gives an explanation of the answer.

Review: This app gives you short mini-lessons on basic math concepts. There is an instructional video with each lesson with a tab for hints, work, and finally the answer. It would be nice If you could write on the screen with a stylus, but all in all a good app.

Title: MathStudio
Publisher: Pomegranate Software
Available For: iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Android
Cost: $19.99
Review: This app features a graphic calculator, 2D graphing, 3D graphing, time graphing, statistics, and scripting. It is a very comprehensive math tool that could be used for any math class requiring a graphing calculator. The graphing capability on the screen is incredible and much clearer than your traditional graphing calculator. However, the app crashes a lot and the user interface still needs to be worked on in order to make it more user-friendly for students.

Title: Nike+ GPS
Publisher: Nike
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: $1.99
Review: The Nike+ GPS app is a great app that tracks running and walking miles. The Nike+ GPS app is designed for iPhones. The Nike+ app comes with all iPods standard and costs nothing. If you use the Nike+ app that is free, you will need a receiver to get the app to work ($20). I have used the app in school as a reward for good behavior. Students who were well behaved were allowed to take the receiver and iPod outside at recess to see how far they could run. Before I knew it, there was a class competition for running miles. When runs/walks are uploaded to the NIke+ website, data of all runs and calories burned is shown. This is a great data analysis activity. Students will never look at data analysis the same way again. I highly recommend getting this app. This is truly an engaging way to put a real-life spin on math.

Title: Numbers League
Publisher: Bent Castle Software
Available For: iPad
Cost: $3.99
Review: Numbers League is a very interesting and engaging app for the iPad. This game practices math facts and operations using super heroes. Each player gets a chance to make super hero. Each part of the hero (head, torso, legs) has a different value. When the hero's body is completed, students find the value of the hero and using the total, try to eliminate villains who are worth certain values. For example: If your hero adds up to 10, you can get rid of the villain who is worth 10. The game gets harder as more heroes join your team. Multiple heroes can be added to get rid of larger villains. The highest level involves addition, negative numbers and multiplication. We use this game with the iPad connected to our data projector. Students love seeing the game on the big screen. They work as teams to win. Amazing!!!

Title: Trigonir
Publisher: S. Cicak
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: $1.99
Review: This is an advanced math application that deals with trig functions. I found a few bugs while using the app, but overall I liked the way you could demonstrate the functions. The pictures are very clear when projected and the colors help the numbers stand out. The problem is that this app does not offer much more than a geometric sketch pad app.

Title: Units
Publisher: Alex Price
Available For: iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone
Cost: Free
Review: Units is a great free app for converting one unit to another. Want to know how many cups are in 15 gallons. This app will tell you. There are no special bells and whistles in this app but it is awesome. I use it in my personal life as well as in school with the students. Some times we don't need to figure out how to convert everything. Some times we just need the answer. This app will do this for you.
